Hieringe biete concert 2026 February 18th, 2026
February 3, 2026, Source: De Nieuwe Ster, Maastricht Translation: Diana D. Le Second edition of the reinstated tradition of Hieringebietekonzèr in Maastricht Lovers of the music of André Rieu's Maastricht Salon Orchestra can once again enjoy the free Hieringebieteconzèr on Ash Wednesday February 18, 2026 on Onze Lieve Vrouweplein. Once again, Onze Lieve Vrouweplein will be the setting for the open-air concert. The tradition was reinstated last year by the Tempeleers in collaboration with André Rieu and his orchestra. Rieu himself did not participate, leaving the conducting to Frank Steijns, who will do so again this year. The event marks the end of Carnival and the start of Lent. Pierre Rieu confirms that the Hieringebietekonzèr will be the same as last year and will be free for everyone. For Pierre Rieu, it is extra special because the concert will take place in front of his own hotel, Hotel Derlon. (To read more about Pierre Rieu and the Derlon Hotel, click HERE.) A pigeon in the bow! Pierre on Instagram: I t was nice and quiet when they build the nest but then…. carnival started. Poor thing.
Sharing an article from RTV Maastricht February 18, 2026 A packed Onze Lieve Vrouweplein (square) enjoys the Maastricht Salon Orchestra and two guests from the popular Limburg band Rowwen Hèze: Jack Poels and Tren van Enckevort Give André Rieu and his band an outdoor performance date and get your sunglasses ready. After three days of Carnival, with all weather and seasons packed into three days, the Maastricht Salon Orchestra (MSO) will be basking in the sunshine on Ash Wednesday. The second edition of the Hieringbietekonzèr 2.0 wasn't just memorable because of the beautiful spring prelude. After by the MSO, there was a special finale. Jack Poels and Tren van Enckevort of Rowwen Hèze treated the enthusiastic audience to their classics in Limburg dialect: "Het is een Kwestie van Geduld" (It’s a Matter of Patience) and "Bestellen Maar." (Please Order). It's 2:11 pm on Ash Wednesday, when Frank Steijns and his Maastricht Salon Orchestra begin their performance with the Maastricht copy of the 1880 Neapolitan sing-along "Funiculì, Funiculà" . The song has held its own version in the Maastricht repertoire of musical entertainment for decades. The repertoire of the Salon Orchestra, which originated in the 1970s, has always been a beautiful combination of light classical music and Maastricht sing-alongs with a classical touch. The return of the "Hieringebietekonzèr" (Herring eating concert) since last year (2025) is a welcome change for the large audience. Ash Wednesday marks the end of the 3 days of Carnival festivities and the beginning of Lent. From a platform at the side of the OLV-square, André Rieu watches as the MSO captures the audience's hearts from the very first minute. From above, it's clear that the carnival revelers of Maastricht haven't quite finished their music. Throughout the concert, there's plenty of dancing, clapping, and singing. While the original "hieringebiete"—a glass of beer and eating a herring from a barrel in the pub—seems to have died a silent death, it looks like the concert that lends its name to the tradition is here to stay for a while. Pierre Rieu, who now runs Hotel Derlon, saw his chance to bring the herring snack back into the picture. Admittedly, it's still neatly presented, cut into pieces and to eat with a cocktail stick. But who knows, maybe next year a traditional bucket with herrings will be passed around.
The concert was broadcasted live by L1 and on Youtube. In this video Ruud added some personal images. Duration: almost 1.5 hours.
Ruud and Ineke are so lucky to live in the Netherlands and we decided to drive, 2.5 hours from our hometown Den Haag, to attend the concert. We took the opportunity to book an overnight stay at the Derlon Hotel. Below is a photo report. (Photos by Ruud and Ineke, and Laurens Bouvrie).
Check in at the hotel, and first of all a nice coffee and gooseberry meringue vlaai (pastry) in brasserie Louis. Our room was not yet ready. We saw André and a few JSO members walking in and out. The hotel provided upstairs space for things like storage and changing rooms.
Outside, work was still in full swing on the covered stage, and an hour before the concert began, rehearsals and a sound check were held. To our surprise we saw 12 musicians on stage instead of the 5 members of the Salon Orchestra. André personally checked that all the microphones on the instruments were working. Oh, there were several confetti canons too!
The following JSO members were positioned behind the salon orchestra: Colin Falize on drums, Leon van Wijk on accordion, Manoe Konings on clarinet, Sanne Mestrom on saxophone, an unknown trumpeter (Patrick Spelthaen), René Henket on trumpet, and Romano Diederen on trumpet. We wondered what that meant. It became even more mysterious when a black curtain was hung, behind which they disappeared.
What do you think? Will the pigeon still be there??

Maastrichts Salon Orchestra: Frank Steijns, pianist and orchestra leader. Gosia Loboda first violinist, Justinas Kaunas second violinist, Tanja Derwahl Cellist, Camila Langue Cipoletta, doublebassist.
André was in the center of the audience and danced with Maja Jasinska and Vera Kool.
Suddenly two members of the popular Limburg rockband Rowwen Hèze appeared on stage! The black curtain was removed and 12 musicians came in the picture to accompany Jack Poels and Tren van Enckevort, in a rousing, fantastic finale. At 3:30 pm, the concert ended with "Adieu." Thanks, André and the Tempeleers, we had a wonderful time. Standing on our feet for about four hours was a challenge at our age! But our room was ready, and we could rest right away! Pierre has plans to modernize the hotel and asked each guest for suggestions for improvement via a welcome card. But as far as we were concerned, it was already perfectly fine. We especially liked the rubber duck, which we were allowed to keep as a souvenir.
And the breakfast in the Roman basement of the hotel, is very special!!
