Madame Bovary is a novel by Gustave Flaubert, written in 1865
It tells the story of Emma, a farmer's daughter, who marries a calm and reliable country doctor at a young
age. After a while she is tired of her boring marriage and dull country life. Disillusioned, she yearns for the
romance and adventures she used to read in her favorite books. She plunges into extravagant affairs and
lives beyond her means in luxury. But she fails to find the happiness she seeks. Her desire for illusions
leads to debt and the ruin of her husband's career. Ultimately, she commits suicide.
